ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REMEDIATION

Deep Soil Mixing
Piketon, Ohio

Geo-Con was subcontracted by R & D Development to perform remedial construction activities at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant is a USDOE uranium enrichment facility located on a 3,892 acre Federal reservation. During Geo-Con's project, the Facility Manager for the plant was Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. Geo-Con's work at the plant required compliance with Facility requirements, security measures and various DOE orders.

Geo-Con's scope of work included installation of a DSM groundwater barrier to contain a plume contaminated with various volatile organic compounds (1,1-DCE, TCE, 1,1,1-TCA, etc.). Analytical results of radiochemical well water samples provided by the Facility Manager showed the presence of gross alpha, gross beta, technetium and total uranium, necessitating pertinent evaluation and control techniques. The barrier wall was 33,350 square feet; 1,080 linear feet; with depths up to 33 feet. The wall was keyed into shale bedrock.
