ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REMEDIATION

Deep Soil Mixing
Sheffield, Illinois

Geo-Con was subcontracted by US Ecology to construct groundwater barrier walls using the Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technology at their Hazardous Waste Management Facility (HWMF) near Sheffield, Illinois. The site consists of a new HWMF, an old hazardous waste disposal site and an Illinois-owned low-level radioactive waste site covering 5.8 acres, which operated from 1967-1974. The new hazardous waste management facility covered approximately 20 acres and was operated from 1974-1983. The majority of wastes (93%) were contained in the new hazardous waste disposal site trenches.

Geo-Con's scope of work included installation of DSM barrier walls in three areas to contain various volatile organic compounds. The areas included the old site (trenches 1-6) and new site (G-120 and 18 EWC areas). The barrier wall was 160,900 square feet, 2,900 linear feet, with depths up to 70 feet.
