ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REMEDIATION

Jet Grouting
Leachate Collection Drain Closure
Olathe, Kansas

Geo-Con performed the closure of a leacheate collection drain ("French Drain") system and collection manhole for a confidential client at a Superfund Site located in Olathe, Kansas. The goals of the project included stabilization of subsurface material contaminated with chlorinated VOCs, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and pesticides as well as the closure of the active collection drain system.

Geo-Con's remediation approach was to completely fill voids in the gravel filled drain and create a soil mix material that has a low permeability. The work essentially consisted of the installation of approximately 123 overlapping jet grouted columns in order to create a monolithic soil mix within the drain and significantly reduce the permeability of the drain material while providing a nominal strength. The drain is approximately 370 feet long, ranges between 17 and 21 feet deep.

The work was performed within 50 feet of an active railroad and conformed to all railroad safety regulations and protocols. The majority of the project was completed on time and within budget despite average temperatures 15 to 25 degrees below freezing.
