ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REMEDIATION
Shallow Soil Mixing
A derivative of the DSM technique, SSM was developed by Geo-Con to treat soils and sludges, in place up to 35-40 feet, using larger tooling for more cost-effective volume treatment for both solidification and containment. It is a state of the art, in-situ treatment technique, which uniformly mixes hazardous soils or sludges with treatment reagents.
The SSM system uses a single, large-diameter (2 to 4 m) mixing auger which, by benefit of scale, provides the most economical soil-treatment system available. Although technically feasible to greater depths and larger diameters, torque limitations and soil consistency usually limits treatment depths to about 35-40 feet (12 m). SSM, like DSM, uses a crane-mounted mixing system with reagents fed into a mixing auger as the auger penetrates the soil or sludge. Uniquely, SSM has the capability to inject not only slurried reagents but also dry powder reagents. It is possible to collect emissions for carbon treatment (soil vapor extraction - SSM/SVE) through a closed system.
Additives and reagents, typically mixed at the batch plant, can be transferred pneumatically for dry materials, or pumped if fluid reagents are used. Reagents are precisely weighed for dry systems or volumetrically measured for fluid mixtures to allow the correct proportions to be mixed with the untreated sludge or soil. The mixing augers advance through the total depth of the soil in an up and down motion. Upon completion of a mixed soil column, the auger is retracted and repositioned to overlap the previous treated soil column and the process is repeated.
