GEOTECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION

Jet Grouting
Mitigation of MSE Wall Deformation
Sunflower, Arizona

This project involves the construction of horizontal and vertical jet grouted columns for ground improvement. Geo-Con crews successfully created a zone of Mechanically Stabilized Earth to provide support for overpass abutments along State Road 87 in Whiskey Springs Arizona.

This challenging project served to refine Geo-Con's diverse background in jet grouting earth stabilization methodologies. Several unique problem-sets presented themselves during the execution of this project. Solutions included new techniques involving the establishment of pilot holes prior to jet grouting operations and experimentation leading to advancements in horizontal drilling/grouting techniques. Geo-Con was able to provide the State of Arizona with a low cost option for achieving the projected goals while maintaining continuous flow of traffic at the project site. Jet grouting equipment used to complete this project included:

  • A Pacemaker II triplex plunger high pressure jet grouting pump powered by a 700 bhp Detroit Diesel 16 valve - 7 in engine with manual transmission
  • A Casagrande C-7 track- mounted drill rig
  • Two 5 cubic- yard colloidal mixers
    • Start: 10/01/01
    • Completion: 12/31/01
